Where to Shop: Fair Trade for Your Home

My journey into shopping fair-trade started slowly and is still moving forward slowly. First with Noonday Collection (a forever love) and then on to other fair-trade clothing companies like LEV Apparel and ABLE. But finding fair-trade and/or sustainable items for my wardrobe has been so much easier than finding fair-trade products for my home.

Now that I’m working to lean into fair-trade and secondhand for the home, I hope to bring you along for the ride as I discover where to shop.

  1. WEST ELM
West Elm has a selection of products that are labeled “Fair Trade” on their website, but you will need to check the item details to find those that fall in this category.
Most recently I ordered a few accent pillows that are made in a Fair-Trade facility: Classic Cotton Velvet Pillow Cover

  2. GOODEE
GOODEE is a leading curated marketplace offering essential homewares and lifestyle products for better living. Our values are simple: we believe in good design, good people, and good impact. Driven by an unrelenting desire to co-create a world that’s smarter, kinder, and more beautiful, we built a platform centered around responsible brands and artisans producing timeless everyday objects and consumers looking to make a difference with their purchases. We believe conscious commerce has the power to transform the world and seek to empower both creators and consumers to create change by championing community, transparency, and sustainability.”

  3. JOYBIRD
Joybird ethically creates their furniture in a facility in Mexico. Employees receive fair, competitive wages and medical benefits, plus for every order, Joybird helps plant tress through through their One Tree Planted partnership.

Joybird also offers “New to You” products for an even more sustainable way to shop. “Enjoy up to 55% savings on returned as-is Joybird products that still have a full and stylish life ahead of them.”

  4. CITIZENRY
The Citizenry is the first home retailer to have 100% of products made with a fair trade process audited and guaranteed by the World Fair Trade Organization. They carry furniture, decor, rugs and more to help you pull together a thoughtful, beautiful space.

  5. AVOCADO
Looking to update your mattress? Check out Avocado! Avocado mattresses are designed in Hoboken and handmade in sunny California, in their own factory with only the finest certified organic, natural, and non-toxic materials. Avocado focuses on environmentally conscious, ethical, and sustainable business practices across the entire supply chain. That’s definitely something that can help you get a great night’s sleep.

Small steps make an impact. The next time you need something for your home, look for ethical, fair-trade companies or shop secondhand/vintage. You’ll likely find items that are more unique while also making a more positive impact with your dollars.

If wanting to focus on shopping with companies that pay fair-wages, look for things like:

  • MADE IN THE USA (because overseas can provide more opportunities for exploitive wages)

  • CERTIFIED B CORP

  • SHOP SMALL

And of course, shopping secondhand is another great way to furnish your home. You can give new life to discarded pieces and create a style all your own.
